Overview

This case focuses on designing a real-time bidding dashboard for a multi-dealer CLO auction.

The goal was to structure dense, rapidly updating data, clarify auction and bid states, and support fast, confident decision-making under time pressure.

Problem

  • Bids were not updated in real time, forcing manual refreshes and increasing the risk of missed or late bidding decisions during active auctions.
  • Data latency and unclear bid status reduced confidence in last-minute actions, especially under time pressure.
  • The existing layout made it difficult to quickly scan bid performance across margins, dealers, and classes in live conditions.

Process

Research

  • Studied how users monitor bids and make decisions during live auctions, with focus on peak activity and time-critical moments.
  • Identified which data points must stay visible under pressure to support fast, confident decisions.

Key Insights

  • Bids need to be grouped by margin and dealer to quickly assess competitiveness and allocation outcomes.

  • Key values must remain visible across all nesting levels to enable fast scanning without expanding rows.

  • Auction status and remaining time must be immediately clear, especially near close or after bidding ends.

Solution

Flow: Grouped by margin (Admin view).
  • Bids are grouped by class → margin → dealer to enable fast comparison and allocation decisions during live auctions.
  • New and updated bids are highlighted, while rejected bids can be hidden to reduce noise and keep focus on winning margins.

  • Dealer-based grouping shows participation and performance across all margins for a single counterparty.
  • Auction status and remaining time are always visible, with consistent filtering preserved across views.

  • Traders see only their own bids during active auctions, reducing information overload and distraction.
  • Bids are placed and adjusted from a side panel, with separate All Bids / My Bids views supporting both awareness and focused execution.

Impact

Real-time bid streaming eliminated manual page refreshes, reduced data latency, and increased confident last-minute bidding, while cutting support load.
