Settlements Accounts

Industry: FinTech

Role: Product Designer

Overview

This case focuses on designing settlement account management and allocation workflows for a FinTech trading platform.

The goal was to simplify complex financial setup flows, reduce manual configuration, and enable automation through reusable allocation templates, while maintaining accuracy, compliance, and scalability.

Problem

  • Setting up settlement accounts involved complex financial data, multiple identifiers, and strict validations, making the process slow and error-prone.
  • Manual configuration and fragmented flows limited automation and slowed down trade allocation and reconciliation.
  • Users needed a reliable way to reuse settlement logic across trading scenarios without losing control or accuracy.

Process

Research

  • Analyzed existing settlement workflows to identify where errors, delays, and manual setup most frequently occur.
  • Studied comparable financial tools to understand proven patterns for complex account setup, validation, and allocation logic.

Key Insights

  • Settlement account structures vary widely between clients, so only essential fields should be shown by default, with advanced and custom fields revealed on demand.

  • Allocation logic must support both manual control and automation, without increasing setup complexity.

Solution

Creating Settlement Accounts
  • The flow surfaces only required fields by default, reducing setup time and cognitive load.
  • Additional and custom fields can be added progressively to support client-specific and regulatory needs.
Allocation Templates
  • Allocation templates automate trade allocation while preserving transparency and control.
  • Only one active template can be applied at a time, preventing conflicting allocation logic.

Impact

Unified settlement setup + allocation templates drove higher automation, faster setup, and stickier cross-module usage.
